Male Victims of Domestic Abuse: Key UK Facts (Latest Available ONS Data)


  • 1.5 million men aged 16+ experienced domestic abuse in England and Wales during the year ending March 2025.
     
  • This equates to 6.5% of all men aged 16 and over.
     
  • Men accounted for approximately 41% of all domestic abuse victims.
     
  • An estimated 5.2 million men (21.8%) have experienced domestic abuse at some point in their lifetime.
     
  • Around 1.2 million men (4.9%) experienced abuse from a current or former partner during 2024/25.
     
  • Approximately 4.3 million men (18.2%) have experienced partner abuse at some point in their lives.
     
  • Around 578,000 men (2.4%) experienced abuse from a family member during 2024/25.
     
  • Approximately 1.8 million men (7.4%) have experienced family abuse during their lifetime.
     
  • Around two-thirds of male domestic abuse victims are abused by a current or former partner, while one-third are abused by another family member.
     
  • Among police-recorded domestic abuse crimes where the victim's sex was identified, approximately 33% of victims were male.
     
  • Only 4.4% of domestic abuse victims receiving support from local domestic abuse services were men.

Global prevelance at a glance

United States: 

In the US, findings indicate that 47.3% of men had experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) at some point in their lives, accounting for almost half (46.9%) of all IPV victims.


In the U.S., nearly 1 in 3 women (30.2%, or 38.6 million) and more than 1 in 5 men (22.3%, or nearly 27.3 million) experienced psychological aggression by an intimate partner.



Canada:  

Canadian data indicate that 2.9% of men and 1.7% of women experienced IPV in their current intimate relationships.


New Zealand: 

Evidence from New Zealand indicates that lifetime IPV prevalence rates are nearly identical for men (29.9%) and women (30.9%).


Australia:

Data from Australia indicate that men account for around one-third of all IPV victims. 


France:

French statistics suggest that just under a third of reported IPV cases involve male victims.


Portugal

In Portugal, men  account for approximately 25% to 28% of reported cases.


Africa:

Evidence from Africa highlights a significant proportion of male victims, with men representing around 44% of victims in Uganda and 31% in Sierra Leone.


Asia:

In Korea, men account for approximately one-third of alll IPV victims.
